Tourist at World Trade Center

Photo hoax of tourist at World Trade Center

This photo circulated widely in newspapers and emails after the terrorist attack on New York's World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

It allegedly shows a tourist on the center's observation deck just moments before the plane (visible behind him) crashed into the tower.

But the photo is largely baloney. Although it supposedly came from film in a camera found in the rubble of the building, various fakebusters quickly moved in to show why it is a hoax. For instance:

  • The scene shows he was on the observation deck of the second tower. If the scene were genuine the first tower would by now be blazing strongly as he posed coolly for this photo.
  • The person taking the photo didn't think it was important to tell the tourist that a plane was about to hit them both.
  • It was a warm day, yet the man is wearing heavy clothing.

Same tourist in other photos

Graphic artists worldwide moved in quickly to fake similar photos, just as they regularly fake UFO pictures.

This same tourist was “photographed” with the Titanic sinking in the background, President Kennedy's assassination taking place in the background, and in a scene reminiscent of the film Ghostbusters, a giant marshmallow man walks behind the tourist.

To cap it off, a Hungarian man admitted it was him in the photo, and he allegedly produced other photos of himself on the observation deck of the tower. And there was no plane in the background.
