What is RSS, and what can it do for you?

RSS is a brilliant way to stay up to date with news headlines or articles from your favorite websites. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a simple way for a website to let you know it has added or updated its information.

You select the sites you want to keep track of. Then, when they add or update information on their site, you see a summary of their changes on your computer monitor or in your web browser.

You can add, delete, or change sites at any time. If you click on a summary it takes you to the web page that has been updated. Millions of people use RSS daily.

RSS can be addictive, and you may have to limit the number of sites you track if you have a lot of news sites, because many of them update their information throughout the day and night.

How to get RSS on your computer

There are several ways to get RSS on your computer. Here are 3.

  1. A very simple way is to sign up for a free Google account if you don't already have one. You get a free email address and can use that account to sign in and get access to Google's free Google RSS Reader. We have become more impressed with the Google reader the more we have used it. Once you have signed up for the Google Reader, come back to our website and click the little +Google logo in the left column. It will automatically add Creation Tips to your list of news feeds in your Google reader.
  2. Another very easy way is to use Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 2. When you go to a page that offers RSS feeds, your browser will display a little orange icon like this, RSS icon, in the toolbar or address bar. If you like the website, click this icon (it won't hurt!) and a message will ask if you want to subscribe. Subscribing is always free. If you subscribe, your browser will check that site regularly for updates. (In Internet Explorer, a list of feeds you subscribe to appears in a column at the left of your screen next to the Favorites list).
  3. A third way is to download a free RSS feed reader from the Web (see below). Put the web addresses of your favorite websites (providing they offer an RSS feed) into your RSS reader.

The Creation Tips website you are now reading offers the service. But not every website offers RSS feeds. When you subscribe to our Creation Tips RSS we will tell you when we add new Christian and creationist articles and news headlines, and will also list articles that have been popular with our visitors over recent days.

We know our creation-evolution articles are controversial, so we don't mind receiving negative emails along with emails of praise (yes, really!).

How to find other RSS readers

  • Go to Tucows downloads and read the reviews. (Many of these readers are not free, so if you want a free one, look in the middle column for the word Freeware.)
  • You can search for free RSS readers on the web (type Free RSS readers into the search box at Google for instance). Or better still, use Google's own reader (see above).

If you would like a simple one to play around with, try Newsplorer. The file size is small, you can move it anywhere on your computer screen, and it works on any computer that is running Windows. (To add Creation Tips to Newsplorer, see below.)

If you have Windows XP or Windows Vista, another popular and simple RSS reader is Snarfer. (To add Creation Tips to Snarfer, see below.)

To add Creation Tips to Newsplorer, click the Configure button, click the + at the right of the box, enter Creation Tips in the top line, and copy the following line into the Channel URL box (make sure there is only one http://):

http://www.creationtips.com/rss.xml

To add Creation Tips to Snarfer, click the plus sign (+) at top left, choose Folder, type in Creation and click OK. Then click the + again, choose Feed, and paste in the address given above.

Happy RSS feed-reading!
