Help stop the atrocities in Darfur
People in Darfur — a region of Sudan in Africa — are being slaughtered in massive numbers. It is widely regarded as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today.
The Sudanese government, and its militia called the Janjaweed, have killed almost half a million people since early 2003. They have forced more than 2 million people from their homes and into refugee camps in appalling conditions. They have burned down hundreds of rural villages, raped thousands of women and young girls, and slaughtered massive numbers of people.
And the atrocities continue.
More than 3.5 million men, women and children now rely totally on international aid for survival. And despite the positive actions of President Bush and the United Nations so far, the violence is escalating.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres, said the situation in Sudan and neighboring Chad is “the largest and most complex humanitarian problem on the globe.”
What can you do?
- Wear a wristband. Buy wristbands for yourself and your friends and wear them to make others aware that you care about the biggest humanitarian problem on earth today.
- Demand international action. Lobby the United States Congress to do more to stop the genocide in Darfur.
- Make a donation. There are many humanitarian groups trying to help the people of Darfur. If you don't know of any, then you can make a donation through Democracy in Action.
- Pray. Pray for the people of Darfur — for their daily needs and for their salvation. Pray for the world leaders trying to do something about the crisis. Pray for the workers and aid organizations who are trying to get relief to the suffering millions who cry constantly because of the beatings, the murdered family members, and the uncertainty of where their next meal will come from.
