Body piercing comments

A lot of teens have written to us about our article on body piercing — some for, some against. For four years we let our readers have their say until many of them starting spam-bombing us. We were happy to publish any reasonable comments for or against our anti-piercing article, which is more than many of the websites promoting bodypiercing do. But we can't spend day and night sifting through spam, so sorry guys, we have dropped our forum.

I'm not saying get it or don't get it, just don't get it because your friends want you to. if you decide to get one, like me, make sure your parents know, it will be a lot easier to have one. “Saying a piercing is going against god is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Not every piercing gets infected. A body piercing will only get infected if you don't take care of it during the healing process. Those whom get there friend to do it with a sewing needle in there mothers bathroom are the ones that get infected. They lie to there parents, saying they got it done professionally done so the parents don't worry. If you get a piercing it needs to be cleaned at least twice a day with an anti microbial soap, and it needs to be cleaned with a sea salt solution. If you do what they tell you there is almost NO risk of infection, as long as a new needle was used.” — Suzanne

“Hi! I am 16 and i have 6 peircings, 5 in my ears and one in my belly, next year i hope to get my tongue done too. I am also a Roman Catholic and come from a strict Christain Background. You may think that piercing is a way for me to rebel, but really it isnt, i wear crucifix-studs often and all of my piercings are very tasteful. I agree that piercing is not neccessarily the brightest idea, for if God had wanted us to have piercings he would have provided holes for us ^_^ but i see it as more of a cultural statement. ” — Pikadili

Myself, I think most piercings take away from a person's attractiveness, but then again some will argue it adds attractiveness. “i am upset that a christian group would write an article that judges others. i am 33 and have a nose ring,belly ring, and more than one tattoo. God made us all different and he knows us on the inside — judging people by the outside is wrong and by the way teenagers you can also get an infection by walking outside and picking up something dirty — this is absurd to say that i may be more inclined to have a drug problem because i have piercings and tattoos — never judge a book by its cover — you love from the inside not the outside. being unique is also in god's plan for us” — shannon

“i totally agree with this article. i am a 14 year old christian, and ive always wanted my belly-button pierced. all my friends had it, and it looked real cute when they wore bathing suits. but many of my friends had horrible infections, even though the piercing is cute, id rather have my health.” — Aleks

“This article highlights the extreme cases. And, another thing that is completely over looked here is the danger of self piercing. If you want to modify your body get educated (research everything from placement and procedure to after care and reputable piercers)and go to a trained professional. And yes there is an association of professional piercers. Any shop that is certified by them will offer sterile needles that are single use as well as proper technique and high quality jewelry. This greatly reduces the risk of things like infections and scarring. As does proper care for your piercings. Yet, all of this information was left out making this article wholly one sided and very misleading.” — Delilah

“honestly if people want to get percings or tattoos it is up to them and no one should judge. my friend hayley has her septum done and that is her choice. im not christian in the least bit, but i dont think they shouldnt be able to get pierced just because of society's christian beliefs. the only thing is that people shod think hard before getting pierced or tattooed as it would be a shame to regret it later on.” — amy

“I see no reason why body piercing or even tattooing should interfer with religion at all. At 15, I have 4 piercings. They're easily hidden and I aspire to become a body piercer myself. If aftercare instructions are fllowed careully and the piercing is done by a reputable studio and piercer then there is no reason why an infection should occur. While it is true that some people may ind piercings 'repulsive' they are becoming more and more common and are a part of a great many cultures worldwide.” — Laura

“I think that Christians need to examine our motives and search our hearts why we want a piercing, especially a piercing that is overtly sexual such as a navel, nipple or tongue. Piercing the tongue was at one time indicitive of kinky inclinations with one's tounge. Know about your piercing. For me, the nose is a sign of fertility and beauty in India. [Editor's reply: Our advice is don't do it! But we are biased against most piercings anyway. So at least wait a few years and talk it over with your parents.]

[Editor's reply: A monroe will make your face look like you have had a stroke, a labret will make you look like you have dribbled food on your mouth, and a septum nose ring may make you look attractive to bulls on the local farm, but not to most humans.]

[Editor's reply: Hi Sammy. It's a cultural thing. Some cultures see lip plates and nose rings as beautiful (as in the photos at right), although our culture generally doesn't. Some people make the error of thinking what works in one culture will work in another, which is often not true. A girl with an earring in her ear is quite normal in Western society, but lip plates and nose rings are still regarded as poor fashion judgments.]

“This is the most ridiculous article I have ever read on the subject. One sided and very narrow minded. Of course there are risks to piercings. There's risks to pretty much everything in life, including life saving operations, giving birth, etc. The examples you give show people who have clearly gone to piercers who have no clue what they are doing (unfortunately there are a lot out there). I have had several piercings, all of which have been fine, as I have gone to an excellent piercer who prides himself on safety and hygeine. Plus, when I have decided to take them out, there have been no ugly scars.” — jenni

“Hey, im Yasmina & i have in all 13 piercings and 2 tattoos, 10 in my ears (4 of them got them done myself), my tongue web, my nipple and my belly and i have a tattoo on my hip and my back. now piercings are dangerous only if you get them done at the wrong place, i had a piercing rejection because of that BUT if you chose the right place for both tattoos and piercings and you take care of them for a long period of time like you're asked to, then you have nothing to worry about :) i love percings and tattoos, as long as they stay discreet (for me at least).” — Yasmina

[Editor's reply: It's best not to get your belly-button pierced at all. That way it won't get infected and you won't have to cope with anything.]

“I feel that a piercing is a lifetime choice. If you don't want it here forever don't get it. The hole never heals up all the way and you will have a scar or bump. As for belly button rings if you gain weigh or get pregnant, whatever the case it will stretch, so if you're cool with that fine. I will say I have two tattoos and had 10 piercings. I current only use 2. As I got older people looked at you and it's not acceptable to all, including employers. So make sure it's tasteful and you can cover it up.” — Tessa Lynn

[Editor's reply: Apart from the pain, when you get a cold or have a runny nose you will have to deal with a jetstream and tissues. If you choose the wrong jewelry you may inhale bits of it. You may get an infection. You may get a red nose and look like Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer. You may get perichondritis and necrosis of the nasal wall, or septal hematoma formation … Do we need to go on?]

“I think that you are very misinformed about body piercing. I have had over 20 body piercings and have never had any problems. I love piercing. I see it as a way to decorate my body. Just as people decorate their church or home, I decorate my body in a way that expresses myself. My body is My temple.” — Jesica
