Body piercing comments (2006)

A lot of teens have written to us about our article on body piercing — some for, some against. For four years we let our readers have their say until many of them starting spamming us. We were happy to publish any reasonable comments for or against our anti-piercing article, which is more than many of the websites promoting bodypiercing do. But we can't spend day and night sifting through spam, so sorry guys, we have dropped our forum.

“in my neibhorhood piercings are called 'skats'. moms and dads are more likly to say yes you can get a skat than if you ask them if you can get a peircing. 'hey mom, can i become a skatter?' “I would just like to say that Jesus had peircings. In his hands and his feet. That is what saved us. Don't judge people it is just another way of self _expression. Comes right out of a sterile bag like the ones in a hospital. Do you think any piercing place is willing to lose their business for a dirty needle? I have no symptoms or problems. “I read your article about piercings and would like to say that being a semi-christian, I find there to be no reason why teens shouldn't be allowed to get piercings, I have my nipples pierced and my ears gauged to 8's in 2 holes in each ear, and am getting my lip pierced. If people are allergic to nickel, then they would know way before they get pierced, I've known I'm allergic since 1st grade, so I just had to ask for Titanium Steel in my nipples.” — Travis

“You are right on the job part. Now because jobs are trying to earn money, not lose it. so having a young man sitting at a cash register with his lip pierced, tongue pierced and three or four tattoos on his neck with his hair spiked might just scare some people away. Especially if they are from the older generation where body piercing were never accepted..or even heard of. And as for tattoos were considered a “dare” back in the 70's and before.Even the 80's it was considered, “sluttish” “dirty” or plain “Bad”. “I don't really have a strong opinion against piercings, tho' I personally wouldn't have more than one hole in each ear. But I did want to tell you I loved your cool New Words page. I had heard some of those words but didn't know what theymeant. I particularly likes “cat typing” and I know someone with a “type T personality”, but didn't know it had a name. “I'm a Christian, I go to church 4 to 5 times a week. I'm very involved in the church and spend as much time as I can there. I have 9 piercing. 5 in one ear, 3 in the other, a nose ring, and belly ring. Most of mine are not professional. I've never had a problems with them. I don't pierce my body because I think it is cool or to fit in with the 'cool crowd', I pierce it because I i like the way it looks. My body is my temple, and piercing it is better than what could be doing to it. I know there are risk, but so is stepping out side of my house. What life without risk?” — Pierre's girl

“in my opinion getting one or two peircing on the lower non cartilige part of your ear is harmless and can add a wide array of fun ornaments to your wardrobe, if you get it peirced at a place that takes the proper conditions. I do not now much about peircing other places except that it hurts much more, takes signifgantly longer to heal and is more susceptible to infection.” — laura age 15

“Hi, I'm a 15 year old Christina, and I go to a Christian school too. I think some body piercings can be great. I only have my ear lobes pierced once, but am planning to get triple pierced, and a left cartlidge. Maybe double right too. If I had a flat tummy, I would get my belly button pierced. I think lip, tongue, nipple and genital piercings are gross, as they can cause your body harm. Nose piercings are ok, but they have to be on the right person, as do eyebrow piercings. Guys only suit cartlidge and eyebrows. But it doesn't matter what people look like or what you think of them because of their piercings. The only thing that matters is their relationship with God and what's in there heart.” — Ellie.

I also know my piercer well enough to trust in him. I know he is a professional working at a professional shop. I watch him open the new needle from the bag. PLEASE DO NOT GET A PIERCING FROM SOMEONE YOU DO NOT KNOW. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW, BY WATCHING, THAT THE NEEDLE AND RING ARE NEW AND DISINFECTED BEFORE THE PIERCE! So that let's me know alot you aren't reading your bibles and living by God's holy word. “I got terrible keloid scars from my piercings. I got terrible infection and skin irritations. No one else in these comments seems to have mentioned keloids, but they are awful. They may become red, itchy, and inflamed, and can change size over time. Keloids are most common in ear and nostril piercings, but may occur in other types of piercings.]

“I am 18 years old, non-religious. I have 2 piercings in each lobe, 1 in my lip, and one in my tongue. I really like having them. I like your article because it is persuasive against piercings, without claiming all sorts of lies. Though I do think most piercings are beautiful, too many can really be too much. Piercings can get infected, any, especially if you don’t keep them clean! You can get blood poisoning and all sorts of problems such as keloids, bruises, and upset family members.” — Bree

“You must be diligent about keeping up your cleaning regimen if you choose to get piercings. Piercings can be painful, my tongue was particularly painful after I got it done, and the swelling was awful So be prepared if you do it. I do think that one should respect their parent’s wishes. Or at least let them know, don’t do things behind their back Infection is real they aren’t trying to lie to you to stop you just because they don’t like it. Chipped teeth and messed up roots are all possible. So please do your research and be careful before you get any piercing done.” — Bree

“It is extremely acceptable for a female to have one hole in each ear. We get in a debate about body piercings when we see multiple holes on through the brow, nose, lip, or tongue (or other places).” — Dana

“this article is ridiculous. yes, there are risks that come with body piercing, but provided that you go to a reputable, clean and lisenced piercer, AND follow your aftercare instructions, then most piercings heal with no problems. peer pressure is not the only reason that teens get piercings, some people have an inate desire to make their body their own. i myself have had 11 piercings.” — Liz

Most of it simply reports the health dangers from medical specialists, and news reports warning of the dangers. Our opinion is that we agree with them.]

“Now as far as your teeth getting chipped from piercings, yes this will happen, but there are also other alternatives as far as jewelry goes. You can always get an acrylic tongue ring, which would reduce your risk of chipping. Same goes for lip rings, but of course not everyone's body will accept acrylic, but there are other alternatives. ” — Brent
